I was recently studying Daniel and came across a great historical connotation of the armies of the north and the south who fight back in forth...

A brief summary of the page here. Chapter 11 has two parts, the first part is Daniel 11:1-35 covers the time from Darius the Mede (chapter 6) until Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175-164 B.C.). The second part, Daniel 11:36 to 12:2 covers the last Gentile ruler (aka ANTICHRIST), who is in power at the return of Messiah.

But this is merely a glimpse of the overall end times scenario.

I also highly recommend a book called "The Islamic Antichrist" by Joel Richardson. That book filled in a lot of details and answered a lot of questions for me about who the last empire is (the empire of AntiChrist). Namely a reformulated Turkey with an Islamic Caliphate...the last caliphate or last Mahdi, (which by the way Iran's Ahmadinejhad seeks to create the circumstances for him to appear and bring about the Islamic version of the Last Days)

Islam's savior appears to be the antichrist of Christianity. Complete with beheading and persecution against Christians and Jews and anyone else who does not agree with Islam, the antichrist is the long awaited Islamic Messiah who will usher in the world rule of the last empire.

The common thread between empires or beasts in Revelation is that they all ruled over Jerusalem. The bible is Jerusalem centric.
The empires that Revelation talks about we can see from history are:

Egyptian
Assyrian
Babylonian
Persian
Greek
Roman and who took over the Roman empire?

"In AD 395, the Roman Empire was divided into two portions; the eastern and the western portions. The eastern portion became known as the Byzantine Empire. In AD 410 the western capital city of Rome fell to invading Germanic Tribes known as the Visigoths or Barbarians. The western/European half of the empire including it's capital had fallen, but the Roman Empire nevertheless continued. How so? It simply shifted it's capital and its throne from Rome to Constantinople-a thousand miles east. The western European portion of the Roman Empire fell but the Eastern Byzantine portion of the Roman Empire lived on for nearly another thousand years. with Constantinople as it's capital. The Roman Empire didn't actually fall until the eastern portion of the Empire finally fell in AD 1453 to the Turks. The Turkish Ottoman Empire succeeded the Roman Empire and ruled over the entire Middle East, including Jerusalem, for nearly five hundred years. The Turkish Empire existed right up until 1909.

Thus we see that the only empire that fulfills the patterns necessary to be considered the seventh empire is the Turkish/Ottoman Empire. This of course corresponds perfectly with Ezekiel's list of nations with such a heavy emphasis on Turkey.

The Turkish Empire was the seat of the Islamic caliphate. It was not until 1923 that the Islamic caliphate was officially abolished. Today the Islamic world awaits the restoration of that caliphate. The Bible teaches that someday soon the Turkish Empire willbe revived.

Revelation 17:8
The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the Book of Life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, then he was not, and yet came again.

At that time we may expect to see the Islamic caliphate restored. Eventually a man might rise to this position whom the Muslim world would refer to as the Mahdi, but whom people of understanding would identify as the man known biblically as the AntiChrist."

This makes a lot more sense than the conventional wisdom about a revived Roman empire. Which many bible scholars regard as the accepted interpretation.

Revelation 17:8-11 The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come.

9 “This calls for a mind with wisdom. The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits. 10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, (at the time of this writing of the book by John the five are Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, and Greek) one is (Rome was still in power and is the sixth Empire to rule over Jerusalem), the other has not yet come (The Turkish Ottoman Empire); but when he does come, he must remain for a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. (The Turkish Islamic Caliphate to come) He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.

There you have it...that is what I believe. So the Islamic nations will come against Israel...but they will also declare a peace treaty for 7 years...and break it in the midst of the 7 years...and persecute the Jews and Christians...in absolute Greatest Tribulation.
