SINGAPORE, May 25 (AP) - (Kyodo)—A Malaysian-flagged oil tanker and a bulk carrier collided in waters east of Singapore on Tuesday, spilling 2,000 tons of oil into the Singapore Strait, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said.
The 57,017 ton oil tanker MT Bunga Kelana 3 collided with the 15,272 ton MV Waily, registered in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in the strait about 13 kilometers southeast of the east coast of Singapore.
There were no casualties, but one of the oil tanker's cargo tanks was damaged, resulting in an oil spill, theMPA said.
It quoted an estimate by the captain of the oil tanker that 2,000 tons of crude oil could have spilled into the sea.
The MPA has launched an operation to clean up the oil spill.
The Singapore Strait, where the incident happened, is near the Malacca Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
