Is Palestinian Statehood A Prophetic Event?
I have been seeing a spike in interest for search queries regarding Palestine being recognized as a state by the United Nations.
Everytime something of significance happens in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict people have questions about these things.
So what significance does Palestinian Statehood have on biblical prophecy?
Perhaps in some small measure. It is a step forward in the expected developments.
The specifics of any development in the Israel / Palestine region and how they affect the city of Jerusalem and the Jewish People are of key interest to biblical prophecy.
Daniel 9:24 talks about the prophecy that has to do with "your people" (the Jews) and "your holy city" (Jerusalem).
24“Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy."
It's imperative when addressing biblical prophecy to understand that the prophecy is Jerusalem-centric and Jewish-centric. This does not change just because we are thousands of years down the road from when the prophecy was given to Daniel.
What Covenant Will Be Confirmed?
Of particular interest is Daniel 9:27 which says, "he (the antichrist) will confirm a covenant with many for one seven".
27He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”
We are talking hear about "a covenant" with "many" for "seven" years. For those who have read an understand the Seventy Weeks or Seventy Sevens prophecy we realize that one seven is a period of seven years.
We don't know for sure what "covenant" will be confirmed. We can surmise that the covenant could be U.N. Resolution 181 and that the "many" means the United Nations.
The United Nations Resolution 181 was established in 1947. The intention of the resolution was to create two independent states side by side; one Jewish state and one Palestinian state and to administrate the city of Jerusalem under International Control.
This Resolution was never completely implemented and therefore could still conceivably be the covenant that is confirmed by antichrist with the many of the United Nations.
The vote to accept Palestine as a nonmember observer state at the United Nations is a step towards fulfilling the original mandate for a two-state solution. Although it is not a complete admission of statehood it only opens the door for Palestine to make claims in the International Courts such as war crimes charges against Israel adn it's leaders. This could and probably will cause considerable harm to any "peace process" undertaken by the governments involved.
What now remains is the ever elusive status of Jerusalem.
The Jews claim Jerusalem as their capital from a clearly historical perspective as well as a biblical perspective. However we know that the temple mount at the heart of Jerusalem is also of great importance to fulfillment of the rest of the prophecy in Daniel 9:27.
What Is The Next Prophetic Step?
What we are not seeing here is a "confirmation" of the covenant for seven years and we are not seeing a final status resolution on Jerusalem.
Though we may be a step closer to fulfilling the confirmation of the covenant in Daniel 9:27 (if so be that U.N. Resolution 181 is the covenant) we are not seeing a completion of the entire covenant which would include a mandate for Jerusalem to be under International Administration.
The next steps we are looking to see as believers in Christ are
1. A seven year covenant confirmed
2. The inclusion of Jerusalem within that seven year covenant.
We are closer than ever before to "the last days" and this is eerily similar to my projected plausible outcome for the future of biblical prophecy. We must see some type of method to administrate peace in Jerusalem so that the Jewish Temple can be rebuilt. Otherwise it can not be desecrated by antichrist according to Matthew 24 and Daniel 9:27
In no way do I claim to be a prophet or to know the future. I simply read from God's Word and try to clearly apply what I can to our current day scenarios. It's really important to keep context in mind as Jewish Centric and Jerusalem Centric.
